Make this easy vegan pizza dough… and never buy frozen pizza again!

Easy vegan pizza dough | Easy vegan recipes

A colleague shared this super easy vegan pizza dough recipe. It is now our go-to recipe for Friday night pizza! My colleague is not vegan, but her recipe just happened to be vegan-friendly. After you try it, you’ll also want to thank Julie for offering this healthy alternative to store-bought pizza dough and frozen pizzas.

Make this easy vegan pizza dough to save on groceries

I once found a frozen vegan pizza at my local grocery store. It was an Amy’s Kitchen Roasted Vegetable Pizza. My excitement was cut short when I saw the price tag: $11,99. Woah! This was a medium-size pizza covered with some roasted vegetables and no vegan cheese. I never bought it, it was too expensive for my budget.

You can buy pre-made pizza dough, but I haven’t been able to find a brand that was vegan-friendly. Frozen dough is also more expensive than making homemade pizza dough.

This easy vegan pizza dough costs approximately $0,50 to make a medium-size pizza (12″). Toppings will obviously cost extra, but I doubt you’ll end up paying over $10 for some veggies and a bit of vegan cheese.

There’s no L-Cysteine in this vegan pizza dough recipe

Ever heard of L-Cysteine? Me neither, at least not before I started looking at the ingredients of frozen pizza dough sold at my grocery store. L-Cysteine is a flavor enhancer used in bread products and is sourced mostly from hog hair, duck feathers or human hair. Yes, you read that right. Needless to say that, beyond the “yuck!” factor, any product containing L-Cysteine is not vegan.

Make the perfect homemade pizza dough with the right ingredients… and tools!

With only five ingredients, this vegan pizza dough recipe is simple to make with what you already have at home. You might need to buy active dry yeast if you don’t bake much, but that’s it!

However, after having tested a few pizza pans, I recommend using one with holes. If you bake your homemade vegan pizza on a pan without holes, the crust will not cook properly and stay soggy. A pizza pan with holes helps the moisture evaporate and the crust become, well, crusty! After having made dozens of pizzas on a pan with holes, no matter what the toppings, the result is always perfect!

Stretching the dough over the pizza pan might take a little bit of practice, but after a few pizzas, you’ll get the hang of it.

  • 1 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 2 cups flour (all purpose, or 1.5 cup all purpose and 0.5 cup whole wheat)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp olive oil
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 425F.
  2. In a small bowl, mix the water, dry yeast and sugar. Let rest for 5 min.
  3. In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt.
  4. Slowly add the water (with yeast and sugar) to the flour, using a fork to mix it in.
  5. Once the wet and dry ingredients are mixed together, add a splash of olive oil and start kneading the dough. Knead until the dough is easy to manipulate.
  6. Form the dough into a ball, leave it in the bowl and cover the bowl with a clean, damp dishcloth. Let rest for an hour.
  7. Once the dough has rested, sprinkle flour on a clean surface and knead the dough a few more times. Pushing down on the dough with your knuckles will help get rid of air bubbles.
  8. Shape the dough into a 12" disk, place the disk on a pizza pan and brush the edges with the remaining olive oil.
  9. Once your pizza is built (adding sauce and toppings), place the pizza pan in the oven and cook for 15-20 minutes, until the edges are golden brown.
