I make hummus regularly, without even planning for it, because I usually have all the ingredients on hand. The base of hummus is chickpeas. I use canned chickpeas because they are convenient. You can also save a few additional dollars by cooking dried chickpeas, but you’ll need to plan ahead if you do.

One ingredient you need to buy if you don’t already make your own hummus is tahini. Tahini is simply sesame butter. It’s more expensive than peanut butter, but since you use a little to make a batch of hummus, one jar goes a long way.

Add liquid in small increments when making hummus, because you don’t want to end up with chickpea soup.

  • 1 can chickpeas (rinsed)
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 2 tsp tahini
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp pepper
  • 1 dash hot sauce (optional, but worth it!)
  • 1/4 cup no salt added vegetable broth (or water)

  • 1 can chickpeas (rinsed)
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 2 tsp tahini
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp pepper
  • 1 dash hot sauce (optional, but worth it!)
  • 1/4 cup no salt added vegetable broth (or water)
Instructions
  1. Juice the lemon.
  2. Add all ingredients, including the lemon juice, to a food processor, except for the vegetable broth.
  3. Set the food processor to high speed and let all ingredients blend together. Add broth as needed to make the hummus more creamy. If 1/4 is not enough, you can add a little bit more, but check the texture regularly.
  4. Transfer the hummus to a container and refrigerate for a few hours to blend the flavors together.
Recipe Notes

Homemade hummus will keep in the fridge for about 4-5 days.
